Spinal Fractures, Conservative Management and Overcoming Tyranny of Distance for Managing Rural Patients

Presented by Dr Ryan Gallagher, Physiotherapist, this presentation explores some of the issues and challenges faced in managing patients who have suffered a spinal fracture living in rural and remote regions, including challenges faced in receiving timely and appropriate care. The presentation draws on experiences, knowledge and processes that Dr Gallagher has employed to improve the clinical outcomes for patients with spinal fractures requiring conservative management with a spinal orthosis, and the role that technology, such as telehealth, can play in managing rural and regional patients.

About Dr Ryan Gallagher:
Dr Gallagher is a Physiotherapist with 10 years’ experience working in Neurosurgery, with numerous journal publications in Physiotherapy, Neurosurgery and spinal fracture management. Dr Gallagher is an affiliated researcher with the Hunter Medical Research Institute and currently works as an advanced practice Physiotherapist in the Neurosurgical Clinic at the John Hunter Hospital in NSW. His research interests include research which improves models of care and the quality of care for patients needing Neurosurgical input.

Presented by Xavier Yu, Radiologist, and Robert Vragovski, Orthopaedic Technologist, this webinar covers medical imaging of simple fractures including how to analyse x-rays, MRIs and effectively read a radiologist’s report. This webinar also covers the conservative management of simple fractures in upper and lower limbs including casting techniques, time frames of healing, force application for best management of common fractures and tips and tricks from a clinician who has treated thousands of fracture patients.

Xavier is also a reader for Monash and NorthWest BreastScreen. He is a current member of the RANZCR Victorian Branch Committee and Diagnostic Economics Committee. Xavier's special interests in radiology include musculoskeletal imaging, breast imaging, health advocacy, clinical governance and education.

About Robert Vragovski:
A Senior Orthopaedic Technologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Rob has over 20 years of experience working in casting, including hosting casting workshops nationally and internationally. Rob also lectures at LaTrobe University and Monash University and has presented plastering workshops for General Practitioners rurally and regionally. Rob is the current treasurer of Australian Institute of Orthopaedic Technologists and a member of National American Orthopaedic Technologists.

Diagnosing and Treating Medial Knee Pain

Medial collateral ligament injuries are among the most commonly diagnosed sports injuries. It is however important to realise that not all medial knee pain is caused by injuries to this ligament. In this webinar, Mark Fulcher, Sport and Exercise Physician at Axis, New Zealand, discusses an approach to the assessment and management of medial knee pain with a specific focus on the medial collateral ligament. The treatment of isolated medial ligament injuries, as well as multi-ligament injuries is also reviewed.

Mark Fulcher (MBChB, MMedSci, FACSEP) is a Sport and Exercise Physician at Axis, New Zealand. Mark is currently the Medical Director at New Zealand Football and Team Doctor for the All Whites, Football Ferns (NZ Women’s Team) and the Northern Mystics netball team. Mark contributes to Sports Medicine education as a regular guest lecturer at universities and Sports Medicine meetings around New Zealand. Mark has a special interest in injury prevention and the treatment of concussion.

About Greg Etherington:
Greg Etherington completed his Orthopaedic training in 1999 in Sydney, before undertaking Spine Fellowships in London from 2000-2002 at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore), Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital (London) and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (London). Greg continued to work in London from 2002-2007 as a Spine Surgery Consultant at the UCLH Trust, before moving to Spine Service in Sydney in 2007. In 2011, Greg was appointed as Spine Surgery Consultant at The Alfred Hospital and Epworth Hospital in Melbourne.
