Abassia Rahmani

Track and Field

“Having a disability does not make one ‘inspirational’. However, hard work, perseverance and determination do.”

Sprinter. Swiss Blade Runner. Sports Management Student. Paralympian.

Abassia Rahmani grew up in a small village in Switzerland with her family. She was active from a young age and her passion for sports was embodied in her love of snowboarding, horse riding, gymnastics and athletics.

At the age of 16, both her legs were amputated below the knee as a result of bacterial meningitis. At first she was keen on hiding her prosthetic legs but after being introduced to the world of Para Athletics in 2013 by a fellow Paralympian, she never looked back.

Abassia quickly returned to a fitness regime and learned how to run on prosthetic sports feet. She began competing in 2014 and earned her first medal at the Para European Championships in Grosseto. The second highlight of her career followed soon after when she finished in 4th place in the 200m final at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Besides pursuing a career in athletics, Abassia is also a business graduate who is fluent in German, French and English. When not on the track or at the gym, there’s a good chance that she’s spending time with her friends and family.

Abassia’s goal is to win a Paralympic medal for her country and inspire as many people along the way to push further when life gets tough.
