Written Order Prior to Delivery (WOPD)

Certain DMEPOs items require a Written Order Prior to Delivery (WOPD.) These items also require a Face-to-Face encounter between the treating physician and patient within six months of date of service.

Effective April 13, 2022 the items billed with the following HCPCS codes are now on the list:

• L0648 - Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis, Sagittal Control, With Rigid Anterior and Posterior Panels, Posterior Extends from Sacrococcygeal Junction To T-9 Vertebra, Produces Intracavitary Pressure To Reduce Load On The Intervertebral Discs, Includes Straps, Closures, May Include Padding, Shoulder Straps, Pendulous Abdomen Design, Prefabricated, Off-The-Shelf
• L0650 - Lumbar-Sacral Orthosis, Sagittal-Coronal Control, With Rigid Anterior and Posterior Frame/Panel(S), Posterior Extends from Sacrococcygeal Junction To T-9 Vertebra, Lateral Strength Provided By Rigid Lateral Frame/Panel(S), Produces Intracavitary Pressure To Reduce Load On Intervertebral Discs, Includes Straps, Closures, May Include Padding, Shoulder Straps, Pendulous Abdomen Design, Prefabricated, Off-The-Shelf
• L1832 - Knee Orthosis, Adjustable Knee Joints (Unicentric Or Polycentric), Positional Orthosis, Rigid Support, Prefabricated Item that Has Been Trimmed, Bent, Molded, Assembled, Or Otherwise Customized To Fit A Specific Patient By An Individual With Expertise
• L1833 - Knee Orthosis, Adjustable Knee Joints (Unicentric Or Polycentric), Positional Orthosis, Rigid Support, Prefabricated, Off-The-Shelf
• L1851 - Knee Orthosis (KO), Single Upright, Thigh And Calf, With Adjustable Flexion And Extension Joint (Unicentric Or Polycentric), Medial-Lateral And Rotation Control, With Or Without Varus/Valgus Adjustment, Prefabricated, Off-The-Shelf
• L3960 - Shoulder Elbow Wrist Hand Orthosis, Abduction Positioning, Airplane Design, Prefabricated, Includes Fitting And Adjustment

What does this mean for you?

When you provide an item with one of the above listed HCPCS codes, on or after date of service April 13, 2022, you are required to have a physician signed Standard Written Order on file before providing the device. This differs form other DMEPOS items, which require the Standard Written Order be provided prior to billing a claim.

After April 13, 2022, a Face-to-Face Encounter with the treating physician within the previous six months is required. Obtain copies of documentation from the physician, check for completeness, and make sure the visit occurred in past six months.
