Effective January 1, 2020 all claims submitted to CMS must include the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI.) This replaces the old cards, which listed the patient's social security number. The MBI creates better identity protection for the beneficiaries.

Effective January 1, 2020 all claims submitted to CMS must include the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI.) This replaces the old cards, which listed the patient's social security number. The MBI creates better identity protection for the beneficiaries.

What does this mean for you?

  • Ask all Medicare patients for a copy of their new card.
  • If the beneficiary does not have a card, use the MBI look up tool on the MAC provider portal.
  • Use the MBI on all Medicare claims, even if the date of service is prior, effective January 1, 2020.

More information about the transition to MBI can be found here.
