Elke's Story

Elke is a 59-year-old resident of Bad Bentheim, a town near the Dutch border. She is an avid triathlete, having completed her first long-distance race in 2015. However, the excitement of her athletic achievements is overshadowed by a life-altering diagnosis in 2016, where only an amputation can save her from greater harm.

After the surgery, Elke transitions to life with a prosthetic limb. She begins using an Össur liner almost immediately. The technician fits her with various liners, but they quickly determine that the Össur liner is the best choice for her. It is practical, uncomplicated, and fits her well, enabling her to walk comfortably.

“In my triathlon events, I often need to switch between different prosthesis, so having a reliable, well-fitting liner is essential.”

Resilience in Motion: My Triathlon Journey

I’m Elke, a 59-year-old from Bad Bentheim, a small town near the Dutch border. I’ve been passionate about triathlons for years now, ever since I completed my first long-distance race in 2015.

My journey into the sport started with a local triathlon event, something that lit a spark inside me and ignited a competitive drive I didn’t know I had. I remember preparing for that race and asking a friend for advice on swimming techniques.

He looked at me with this slightly pitying expression and said, “You can learn it, but you learn it at 5, not at 50!” His words triggered something in me. Driven by that challenge, I dove into the water, got on my bike, and ultimately crossed the finish line first among the women competitors.

The joy of that victory, however, was interrupted by something far more serious. In 2016, shortly after returning from a training camp, I started feeling a persistent pain in my ankle.

At first, I thought it was just another sports injury. But soon enough, tests revealed a malignant tumor in my ankle joint. It became clear after consultation with the doctors that the only way to move forward was through amputation. It was the only option to prevent further damage.

“The Össur liner has been the perfect solution for me.”

Why my liner is perfect for me

After the surgery, I had to adapt to life with a prosthesis. I started using an Össur liner almost immediately. The technician tried a few different liners with me, but we quickly found that the Össur liner was the best fit. It was practical, simple, and gave me the support I needed to walk comfortably.

In my triathlon events, I often need to switch between different prosthesis, so having a reliable, well-fitting liner is essential. The Össur liner has been the perfect solution for me. With it, I can slip into my prosthesis quickly and seamlessly, allowing me to keep my focus on my goals and not on whether my prosthesis will hold up.

Thanks to this liner, I can devote my energy fully to the race, feeling confident and free from worry about the fit of my prosthesis.
