Knee braces for ligament injuries

Össur has a range of knee bracing solutions for knee injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, or osteoarthritis. Our braces provide functional ligament support for unstable ligaments after, for example, a sports injury. Our clinically tested braces provide dynamic support during flexion to reduce the ACL and meniscal straining during the healing process.

The knee

Knee injuries are the most common injury in sports.

The knee is made up of several structural parts that stabilise the joint (cartilage, bones, the meniscus, and ligaments) and is the largest joint in the body. The cruciate ligaments in the knee stabilise the movement of the joint during bending. The ligaments on the sides of the knee serve to stabilise the knee joint laterally. Injuries to these structures are common and can occur, for example, with tackles and quick turns.

ACL Ligament Injury

Grade 1

Minimal injury. The ligament is stretched but still stable

Grade 2

Moderate damage and instability. Sometimes referred to as a partial tear

Grade 3

Completely torn ligament, significant instability

An ACL ligament injury is assessed based on the severity and extent of the injury.

How do knee injuries occur?

Knee injuries, especially ligament injuries, are most common during sports activities. When the knee ligaments are damaged the knee will feel unstable. Ligament injuries can occur in the extra articular (outside the joint) and intra articular (inside the joint) ligaments of the knee and are usually caused by trauma to the knee.

Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament involves hitting the outside of the knee or twisting the knee with the tibia turned out. The pain is felt on the inside of the knee and can be indicative of a marked instability in the event of a serious injury. Injuries to the collateral ligament occur when the knee joint is stretched or has received a blow to the inside or outside of the knee. The pain is experienced on either side of the knee and is susceptible to sideways instability when moving. In severe knee injuries with fully torn ligaments, multiple ligaments are damaged and are characterised by, for example, pain when bending the knee and dislocation of the knee.

How can a knee brace help?

We have a wide range of knee injury braces, and choosing the correct one to support your recovery from your injury can be important in keeping you active whilst you heal.

The Rebound ACL can be used for conservative or surgical treatment of anterior cruciate ligament injuries and compliments existing treatment protocols. The Rebound ACL is designed to comfortably apply correct and dynamic load to the anterior cruciate ligament. The innovative technology used in the Rebound Dynamic Tension System (DTS) allows the knee brace settings to be individually adjusted to reduce the strain on the ligament whilst it heals.
