New Medicare Cards and Patient Identifiers

Posted by Linda Collins | June 07, 2018

Effective April 2019, social security numbers (SSN) will be removed from all Medicare cards. A new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the old numbers. The MBI will be used for all Medicare transactions such as billing, eligibility status, and claim status.

Medicare is mailing the new cards in phases. Some beneficiaries already have the new card. All beneficiaries will receive the new card by April 2019.

You can begin using the new cards and MBI during the transition period of April 1, 2018 - December 31, 2019. As of January 1, 2020, you must use the new card and MBI no matter what the date of service.

What does this mean for you?

Work with your billing vendor to make sure the system is updated and formatted to manage the new identifiers.

Notify your staff they will see Medicare cards with the new MBI. The MACs have a look up tool to find MBIs. Be sure to register with the provider portal for access.
