New Medicare Cards

Posted by Linda Collins | February 15, 2018

Effective April 2019, social security numbers (SSN) will be removed from all Medicare cards. A new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the old numbers. The MBI will be used for all Medicare transactions such as billing, elibility status, and claim status.

Medicare will begin the transition to new MBI by April 2018. Beneficiaries will start receiving the new cards. The cards will be mailed in phases so not all Medicare beneficiaries will receive the new card at the same time.

You can begin using the new cards and MBI during the transition period of April 1, 2018 - December 31, 2019. As of January 1, 2020, you must use the new card and MBI no matter what the date of service.

What does this mean for you?

Work with your billing vendor to make sure the system is updated and formatted to manage the new identifiers.

Notify your staff that starting in April they may see Medicare cards with the new MBI.
