Make and Model Numbers Required on Proof of Delivery

Posted by Linda Collins | March 04, 2015

New requirements for Proof of Delivery are for the items to be identified by make, model number and serial number if possible. Simply listing an L code and the narrative description of the product is not sufficient. The DME MACs have stated that PODs that fail to properly identify this information may result in the entire claim being denied.

What does this mean for you?

Check your process for listing items delivered. Instead of simply listing the HCPCS codes, provide the brand name and model number, brand name and serial number or manufacturer name and part number to identify the product. If you do not have this information, you may provide a detailed narrative of the product. Avoid simply restating the HCPCS description.

The Proof of Delivery is a DMEPOS Supplier Standard and is required for all items delivered to a Medicare beneficiary. The POD, which is signed by the beneficiary at time of delivery, serves to confirm the exact items the beneficiary receives. See Proof of Delivery Requirements.
