How Often Can I Provide a New Prosthetic Socket?

According to the Medicare Local Coverage Determination (LCD) and Policy Article, there is not a specified reasonable useful lifetime for sockets. Socket replacements may be reasonable and necessary if documentation supports a change in the patient's functional level, the patient's physiological condition, or the socket is irreparable.

Remember to:

  • Obtain a new prescription for the socket
  • Check physician's corroborating notes for indication of continued need and functional or physiological changes.
  • Document function and/or physiological changes in your notes.

You may read the entire LCD here.
