Competitive Bidding Update: Round 2019

Posted by David McGill | February 01, 2017

Late yesterday, Medicare announced that it will commence a new round of competitive bidding that will take effect on Jan. 1, 2019. Off-the-shelf orthotics are not included in this new round. Here's what you need to know:

  1. OTS orthotics remain outside the scope of the next round of competitive bidding, which CMS has labeled Round 2019.
  2. Round 2019 (a) includes all of the products that have historically been included in competitive bidding to date, (b) adds insulin pumps and related supplies to the list of competitively bid products, and (c) adds CPAP devices as well, but only in 10 new competitive bidding areas.
  3. The bidding process for all of the items that are subject to competitive bidding begins this summer (2017).
  4. Round 2019 will take effect on January 1, 2019 for all of these products, placing them on the same competitive bidding schedule moving forward.

What does this mean for you?

CMS's decision to again exclude OTS orthotics from competitive bidding is a positive development for all suppliers of these devices. We are cautiously optimistic that as a result of this announcement, the delivery system and reimbursement for these devices will remain stable through 2018.

However, as anyone who follows healthcare news already knows, there is more volatility and uncertainty affecting U.S. healthcare today than normal. Things remain extremely fluid as Republicans in Congress continue to try to develop a strategy to repeal and replace The Affordable Care Act. We will therefore continue to closely monitor developments and provide you updates as new information becomes available.
