Are You Using the Correct ABN Form?

Posted by Linda Collins | August 30, 2017

The Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage (ABN) form notifies patients that Medicare may deny the service or item provided. Effective June 21, 2017 there is a new version of the ABN form all suppliers must use.

Medicare has updated the form to include language, which notifies beneficiaries of their right to nondiscrimination practices and how to request an ABN in alternative format, if needed.

As of June 21, 2017, this new ABN format is required. Provide the ABN to the patient prior to delivery of the device, give a copy to the patient, and retain a copy in your files.

For more information about the use of ABNS, read the ABN Form Instructions or Chapter 30 of the Medicare Claims Processing Manual. You may download the new ABN version here.
