With 50 years of innovation, technological firsts, and industry milestones, Össur continues on a mission to improve people’s mobility, so they can live their Life Without Limitations.
Össur was founded in 1971 by Icelandic prosthetist Össur Kristinsson, together with several Icelandic disability organizations.
Initially, the company served only as a prosthetic clinic for the domestic Icelandic market.
The first CTi® ligament brace was created in 1981 and introduced to the market in 1983.
CTi has continued to develop over the years and remains the cornerstone of our ligament bracing product line.
In 1986, Össur Kristinsson developed the world’s first silicone prosthetic liner called Iceross®.
This was the company’s first patented invention and marked the beginning of Össur’s commitment to innovation and technological advancements for the benefit of amputees around the world.
ICEROSS stands for Icelandic Roll-On Silicone Socket.
It has been manufactured using 100% renewable energy for over 25 years.
In the late 1990’s the Össur head office was located in this building in Reykjavik, Iceland, with approximately 30 employees.
In 2021, the company employs more than 3500 people in over 30 countries.
In 1996, Jón Sigurdsson was hired as Össur President & CEO. He remains at the helm today and has led the company during its successful growth journey.
In 1999, Össur became the first prosthetic company to be publicly listed on the stock exchange.
Since 2009, Össur has been listed on the Nasdaq Copenhagen stock exchange.
Originally developed by Van Phillips in the 1980’s, Flex-Foot® was the original carbon fiber prosthetic foot.
Össur acquired Flex-Foot in 2000 and that formed the basis for further innovation and development of carbon fiber feet that continue to be recognized for function and quality the world over.
Össur opened its first European sales office in Eindhoven, The Netherlands in 2001 and custom built a state-of-the-art facility in the city in 2016.
Össur acquired Unloader® from Generation II in 2003, a milestone which marked the company’s entrance into bracing & supports.
The first Unloader brace began with a prototype made of plastic and metal in 1986 and has developed into a world-class clinically proven, biomechanical treatment option.
In 2003, Össur committed to three core values that remain central to the Össur culture.

Bionic Technology by Össur was first introduced in 2004 when the first generation RHEO KNEE® came to market.
Multiple iterations have followed and the RHEO KNEE is now recognized as one of Össur’s most successful products.
In 2005, Össur introduced the POWER KNEE™, the world’s first motor-powered prosthesis for above-knee amputees.
The POWER KNEE was recognized by scientists and the media for being the first of its kind and marked the beginning of a new era of powered prosthetics.
Bionic Technology by Össur continued to build momentum with the introduction of the PROPRIO FOOT® in 2006.
The PROPRIO FOOT is the world’s first intelligent prosthetic foot to utilize artificial intelligence and sensors to adapt to different terrain in real-time.
In 2006, Össur was named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum.
Össur opened its main office for the Asia region in Shanghai, China in 2006.
Össur's distribution facilities have grown tremendously since exporting began in the early 1990’s.
Cutting edge technology is now used to deliver our products to customers around the world.
In 2007, Össur’s entry into bracing and future vision for prosthetics was covered in a detailed article in Forbes Magazine.
In 2009, Össur was listed on the Nasdaq Copenhagen Stock Exchange.
Össur celebrated its 20-year listing anniversary at Nasdaq in New York in 2019.
Össur wins the Red Dot Design Awards in 2011 for PROPRIO FOOT® and Rebound® Air Walker.
Össur has partnered with leading athletic brand Nike since 2011 on co-development of the Nike Sole.
In 2012, Össur continued making history with its Bionic products when it introduced the SYMBIONIC LEG®.
It was the world’s first complete bionic leg where the knee and foot were synchronized to work together.
In 2013, Jon Sigurdsson, President and CEO of Össur was named among the 20 greatest business thinkers in the Nordics.
Össur acquired TeamOlmed in Sweden in 2013.
Since then, a number of other patient care facilities have been added to Össur's portfolio.
Össur became signatory of the UN Global Compact in 2011 and signed the UN Women's Empowerment Principles in 2014.
In 2014, Össur launched the Rebound® Cartilage.
It was the first brace specifically designed to support functional healing after knee cartilage repair.
The Össur Women’s Leadership Initiative (OWLI) was established in 2014 and is the first industry program of its kind.
In 2014, a new Össur Academy facility opened in Orlando, Florida.
In 2015, Össur introduced the first mind-controlled prosthetic lower limb for amputees.
Össur signed a new agreement with the Alfred Mann Foundation in 2019 to continue to extend exploration in this field.
In 2015, Össur launched the Rebound® PCL, the world’s first dynamic force brace.
In 2016, the brace won the Sports Medicine Award for Innovation in Rehabilitation.
Össur launched the company's first online contest, #MyWinningMoment, celebrating amputee mobility in 2016.
Össur mind-controlled technology was featured in a mini-documentary produced by The Economist in 2016.
The Össur Formfit® Pro line of 3D compressive knit solutions launched in 2018.
In 2018, the Össur Unloader One® knee brace was confirmed in a first of its kind placebo OA bracing study.
It was deemed clinically proven to reduce pain, improve function and decrease the use of pain medication among patients suffering from Osteoarthritis.
An evolution in bracing, the Rebound® ACL was introduced by Össur in 2018.
It was designed to comfortably apply an anatomically correct, dynamic load to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
In 2019, Össur and KD (Kinneir Dufort) won the Red Dot Design Award and the iF DESIGN AWARD for RHEO KNEE® XC.
In 2019, Össur and the Danish National Olympic & Paralympic Committee entered into a partnership agreement.
Team Össur members are elite athletes who compete on the world’s stage and consistently win medals and world records.
Many of them hold record-breaking firsts.
In 2020, Team Össur member and long jump world record holder Markus Rehm was named Germany's Parathlete of the Decade.
Össur commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goals was confirmed in 2020.
Goals 3, 5, 12 and 13 will be receiving special focus.
Össur has grown both through organic growth and external growth spurred by over 50 acquisitions in 20 years.
Össur athletes featured in “Rising Phoenix” in 2020.
The Netflix’s documentary is about the impact para-athletes have had on the world.
Össur donates work and components to the Icelandic health authorities in 2020.
This was achieved by custom manufacturing Mobile Patient Isolation Units used to transport infected patients during Covid-19.
Össur has more than 2000 patents and patent applications and the Össur brand is protected by more than 500 trademark registrations.
In 2021, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ranked Össur second in the world for top patent applicants in conventional mobility assistive technologies.
Össur will be carbon neutral in 2021.
