Össur Users Claim 4 Medals In Leg and Arm Prosthesis Races
Amputees wearing commercially available technologies from prosthetics innovator Össur dominated the lower-limb competition at the recent Cybathlon event in Zurich, Switzerland, claiming all three medals in the Leg Prosthesis Race. Cybathlon was the first-ever global competition designed to pit users of different assistive technologies into contests assessing their ability to address real-life obstacles.
Above-knee amputee Helgi Sveinsson won the Gold Medal, completing the entire course in just 64 seconds wearing his Össur RHEO KNEE® XC. Teammates Billy Costello, using an Össur running leg, and David Jonsson, using an Össur POWER KNEE™, took Silver and Bronze, respectively. The fourth member of Össur’s Cybathlon team, Lukas Kalemba, claimed 9th place.
“We congratulate all of the participants in the Cybathlon, which was not a science fiction or fantasy event, but a demonstration of what advanced prosthetic technologies are capable of doing in real-life scenarios today,” said Jon Sigurdsson, Össur’s President and CEO. “Össur’s prostheses help enhance the mobility and quality of everyday life for countless amputees around the world, and the collective performance of our Cybathlon team was unmatched in demonstrating the cutting-edge functionality of our prosthetic innovations.”
An estimated 4,600 people cheered the 12 “pilots” who wore different lower-limb prostheses while competing to complete six designated challenges, including sitting and rising from an upholstered chair, side-stepping over barriers of varying heights, climbing and descending ramps, and balancing food items on plates while traversing up and down stairs.
In the Powered Arm Prosthesis Race, contestants were required to prepare a meal, carry large objects over stairs, and manipulate designated objects with their prosthetic hand. Arm amputee Claudia Breidbach took the Bronze medal wearing her Touch Bionics i-limb™, and teammate Bert Pot took 7th. Össur acquired Touch Bionics earlier this year.
