Össur Salutes Its Laureus World Sports Award Nominees

Össur congratulates two exceptional athletes for their nominations as World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability by the 2018 Laureus World Sports Award.

Össur Ambassador and Dutch para-snowboarder Bibian Mentel-Spee is the defending World champion in both snowboard-cross and banked slalom snowboarding. A below-knee amputee and cancer survivor, she made history as the first woman gold medalist when Para snowboarding was introduced at the 2014 Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. She plans to defend her title at the upcoming Paralympics in Pyeongchang, despite having spent much of the past year undergoing cancer treatment. Bibian also runs the Mentelity Foundation, which encourages children with impairments to participate in wakeboarding, snowboarding and skateboarding.

Team Össur member Markus Rehm is a two-time Paralympic gold medalist and World Record holder in the Long Jump T44 category. At the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships, the German athlete’s winning 8.00m leap was more than a meter further than the next closest competitor, and he also took gold as a member of the 4x100m Men’s Relay T42-36 class. Markus, who became a below-knee amputee following a wakeboarding accident at age 14, also competes against able-bodied athletes, most recently winning the Long Jump gold medal at the 2016 Indoor Grand Prix in Glasgow, Scotland. Markus supports children with impairment as an active member of Germany’s “Youngsters Training For The Paralympics” program.

"The Laureus Award is among the most prestigious honors in world sport, and both Bibian and Markus are very deserving of this recognition,” said Össur CEO Jon Sigurdsson. “We are inspired by their tireless efforts and extraordinary accomplishments, as they truly embody what it means to live Life Without Limitations.
